Viggianello: competition route and village to visit for participants in the first “Trofeo Basilicata Sud Occidentale di Orienteering” (Southwest Basilicata Orienteering competition).
Grey weather and clouds didn’t discourage Orienteering competitors that competed in the second stage of the “Southwest Basilicata Orienteering competition” on Sunday morning in Viggianello. It’s a comptetition in the historical centres and during it local athletes will be selected to participate in the 2006 MOC (Mediterraneo Open Championship) PWT (Park World Tour), an international competition that will take place in Fardella on 10 March (5th MOC stage) and in Lagonegro (2nd PWT stage). Approximately 30 competitors run in the striking historical centre of Viggianello. About 15 of the competitors also participated in the Chiaromonte’s race.
The most interesting thing was that whole families entered the competition. They took their children to the competition and then decided to take part in the competition.
One of the parents who participated in the competition said “Orienteering is an educational instrument for our children, but it’s also a way to know the territory of Basilicata”. He invited to continue and promote this sport.
It is a perfect union between sport and tourism. It can help to know the hinterland of Basilicata. The Pollino village was the competition route, but after that it was visited by the competitors and their managers.
Mariangela Coringrato , Mayor of Fardella, Giovanni Torcelli, President of “Oriclub” and Antonietta Latronico, President of “Fardella Endas” were present.
It was the first success in the touristic field for Viggianello. It means that LAG Allba participation in the transnational project “ORIENTEERING sport and environment. Innovative sources of development” was a good bet.
The 3rd and last stage of the competition will be on 26 February, in the historical centre of Rivello.
