MEDITERRANEAN OPEN CHAMPIONSHIP:
A NEW CONCEPT

The Park World Tour experience made it clear the demand for strengthening a big international orienteering event in the Mediterranean area every year.
A new long-term concept developed by Gabriele Viale and the PWT Italia - Orienteering Academy team.

The MOC – Mediterranean Open Championship is:
  • an international orienteering event with travelling stages in the Mediterranean area which takes place every year;

  • a medium of communicating values, emotions, traditions and culture;

  • a multi-year project with two goals;
    - to promote a territorial development through sport(intervention on juvenile deviance, experiences and lifestyle exchange)
    - to exploit the Mediterranean as Eco Tourist and Sporting resort in the less popular months.

The Mediterranean Open Championship is a travelling event with both PWT and forest races with different formats (sprint, middle and long distance). Participation is open, for all the national representative teams in addition to the Mediterranean countries ones. The first edition was held in March 2005 in the Apulia region with stages in Carovigno, Gallipoli, Otranto and Brindisi.

The second edition was held in March 2006 in Sicilia and Basilicata regions with stages in Corleone, Palermo-Real Parco La Favorita, Madonie-Piano Pomieri-Castelbuono, Palermo-Monte Pellegrino, Bronte-Etna, Lagonegro e Fardella.
