MOC staff is working for you
In the end of November the MOC 2007 STAFF spent several days in Villaggio del Catalano (event centre of MOC 2007) in Castellaneta Marina (Taranto). Many important things have been done during several sunny days.
Marcello Di Battista, president of the organizing committee, was delighted about the teamwork: "Gabriele Viale's team worked very hard during this time and we made many agreements with municipalities, sponsors, media and so on. We are also planning the leisure activities we will offer to the participants, like tours in wine cellars, excursions to oranges farm, typical dishes, possibility of playing golf, rent a bicycle, sightseeing tours and banquet in historical town close to Castellaneta with night orienteering and many other activites".
As far as the technical aspects are concerned, the most important affair was the mapping work in the Castellaneta forest. Robert Zdrahal (the technical manager) brought three mapmakers from Czech Repubblic and Slovakia with him. "Some of them are involved in the mapping staff of WOC 2008 and I’m very proud that they cooperate with us on MOC 2007. I think that it will guarantee the high quality of maps here in Orienteering Academy Catalano" said Brko.
Peter Marecek, one of the mapmakers, says he was surprised about how big and how tricky the area covered by pine forest is. "It's even a pleasure for us to work here in southern Italy in the end of November, with a temperature of 26 degrees!!"
This area close to Castellaneta is so interesting that we are planning to stay here in the future. We would like to explore possibilities to organize competitions in historical town centres like Bari, Matera, Alberobello, Lecce, Castel del Monte and of course forest competitions in big woods close to Gravina di Puglia. Catalano Academy is going to be a big training centre in Mediterranean area for orienteering and other outdoor activities, because the weather during winter time is very suitable for training.
